#WomanEmpowermentWednesday Greer Garson and "She M'Daisy" in Random Harvest (1942)

Although "Random Harvest" was a film adaptation of a popular novel, its two main characters brought plenty of characterization ideas and notes. Meeting up privately with director Mervyn LeRoy, producer Sidney Franklin and the writers, Greer Garson came up with the problem they were having to present her character of Paula on stage. She was the one to suggest Harry Lauder's standard "She M'Daisy" in a short kilt. Although Louis B. Mayer was skeptical on the length hurting her image as a more refined actress at first, producer Sidney Franklin jokingly offered her an office in the writer's building.

#WomanEmpowermentWednesday #MemorableSupportingActor Beulah Bondi

Bondi was better known to have played James Stewart's mother in four different movies including "It's a Wonderful Life" (1946) and "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" (1939). Although having been typecasted as matriarchs in her long film career, it was playing that same role as Andrew Jackson's wife in "The Gorgeous Hussy" (1936) that nominated her for the new category of best supporting actress. Bondi had transitioned to television, having played Aunt Martha in "The Waltons" as her last role in 1976.

One day in 1933 in Louis B. Mayer's office, an ultimatum was made. Either his most popular actor, silent star William Haines enter a "lavender marriage" with a woman or leave Hollywood because of his sexuality. Haines was reported to have said in this meeting "but I am already married" to his lover of 7 years, Jimmy Shields.
