Bondi was better known to have played James Stewart's mother in four different movies including "It's a Wonderful Life" (1946) and "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" (1939). Although having been typecasted as matriarchs in her long film career, it was playing that same role as Andrew Jackson's wife in "The Gorgeous Hussy" (1936) that nominated her for the new category of best supporting actress. Bondi had transitioned to television, having played Aunt Martha in "The Waltons" as her last role in 1976.
