The otherwise nicknamed "Beautiful Hunk of a Man" was born in Kentucky January 29, 1913. After moving to California, he studied and acted at the Pasadena Community Playhouse while living in a tent in the backyard of a fellow student's mother. Hal Roach discovered Mature while acting in a production of To Quito and Back, offering the budding actor a 7-year contract which 20th Century Fox bought the last half of in 1941. At 20th Century Fox was where Mature truly hit his stride, his best known films being "The Robe" (1953), "Demetrius and the Gladiators" (1954) and "Samson and Delilah" (1949).
