Born Dorothy Marian Isbell in 1899 in England, the woman that would become Dolly Tree was already in the film industry before becoming a costume designer. From 1915 to 1918, she had acted in 5 British silent films. She began to costume for the British stage in 1920, becoming one of the first women to design for the Foliges Bergere. By the end of the decade, Isbell moved to New York. While in the states, she worked on many Broadway plays, including creating Mae West's iconic look for West's penned stage play Diamond Lili. Once in Hollywood, Tree worked primarily for MGM for the next decade dressing such stars as Myrna Loy, Jean Harlow and Judy Garland before retiring around the mid '40s.
