Although better known as a Broadway stage, the 1948 film adaptation of "One Touch of Venus" received mixed reviews. Naturally, The New York Times was harder on the film, calling it "a second-rate brand of slapstick" and continues to desecrate Gardner's performance as having "the customary coyness and swagger of a
strip-teaser about to go into her act, the camera flings glances at her like those of a bug-eyed gent in the bald-head row. Then it falls back exhausted, while banalities cool its molten lens." (
Movie Review -- Ava Gardner and Robert Walker in 'One Touch of Venus,' Feature at the Capitol - NYTimes.com) Variety was more forgiving, describing it "as a pleasant comedy fantasy" and Gardner's performance as "delivered with a delightfully sly instinct for comedy." (
