One day in 1933 in Louis B. Mayer's office, an ultimatum was made. Either his most popular actor, silent star William Haines enter a "lavender marriage" with a woman or leave Hollywood because of his sexuality. Haines was reported to have said in this meeting "but I am already married" to his lover of 7 years, Jimmy Shields.
